Not So Similar
Though I am glad that the kids and I shared some common ground, I believe the community service would’ve been far less entertaining and enjoyable had it not been for the vast difference in culture.
On our first day, we were taught a dance that was easily mastered by five year old South Africans in seconds but took me hours to even finish. Everyone I met seemed to be an expert in singing and dancing and the urge to dance seemed contagious because once one person would start everyone would follow as if it were second nature.
There just seemed to be a general happiness that I have not seen anywhere else. The kids were able to make the most miserable and rainy days into almost parties were everyone was dancing and playing games. The dancing, the singing, and the music all made the atmosphere very light and playful which led to more times that wont be forgotten.
